The Kurdistan Studies Institute
The Kurdistan Studies Institute commenced its operations in 2000 following the preliminary approval of the Deputy Ministry for Research at the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology. Originally founded as the "Kurdistan Studies Center," it began with the establishment of the Department of Kurdish Linguistics and Literature. The center was established to uncover the profound and often unrecorded cultural heritage of Kurdistan—a deeply influential region within Iran—and to conduct comparative research in both folklore and written literature.
To advance theoretical discourse on indigenous cultures and to conduct strategic analyses of the economic, social, and administrative dimensions of Kurdish-populated regions, the center subsequently established two new departments: the Department of Kurdish History and Culture, and the Department of Strategic and Development Studies of Kurdistan. Following these expansions, in May 2016, the center received official approval from the Higher Education Development Council to be elevated to the status of an Institute. In recent years, in line with its broadening research horizons, the academic structure of the institute has been further enriched by the addition of the Department of Zrebar Lake Environmental Studies and, most recently, the Department of Hawraman Studies, ensuring a comprehensive approach to regional studies.
Today, having firmly established its academic standing, the Institute is recognized as the premier specialized academic authority in Kurdish studies and ranks among the most prestigious research centers in the Middle East. A crowning achievement of the institution is the publication of the Journal of Kurdish Literature—the only accredited, peer-reviewed academic journal in the Kurdish language officially recognized by the Ministry of Science. Furthermore, the Institute boasts an extensive publication record, having authored, translated, and published over 60 reference and specialized volumes in the fields of Kurdish language, literature, history, and culture, vividly demonstrating the dynamism and depth of its scholarly output.
The Kurdistan Studies Institute has also been a consistent pioneer in academic diplomacy and cultural exchange. By regularly hosting major international conferences (such as the International Conferences on Hawraman), along with national and regional events and specialized seminars, the Institute has created an unparalleled platform for scholarly collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Moreover, serving as the founder and organizer of the inaugural "World Kurdish Book Award" represents a historic and enduring milestone in honoring academic luminaries, supporting researchers, and advancing the publishing landscape within this field of study.
